Pakistan is facing the worst disaster due to floods. Meanwhile, the Hindu community in Balochistan has shown humanity and religious harmony by opening the doors of a temple to shelter the flood victims.
Floods have badly affected 80 districts of Pakistan and the death toll from floods in the country has reached close to 1200. Jalal Khan, a small village of Kachhi district of Balochistan, has been cut off from the rest of the province due to floods.
Pakistani media reported that floods in the country destroyed houses and caused widespread destruction. According to reports, locals have opened the gates of Baba Madhavdas temple so that the flood victims can take shelter in the temple.
Recently, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) also expressed concern over the provision of health facilities to approximately 6,50,000 pregnant women in flood-affected areas in Pakistan. “73,000 women are expected to give birth by next month,” the UN agency added, as the UN secretary-general arrived flood-hit Pakistan on a two-day visit on Friday, ARY News reported. He visited to show solidarity with the people of the country, which was hit by the country’s worst floods in a decade.
Record monsoons and severe floods in Pakistan have led to starvation and various diseases affecting 33 million people. Experts believe that the situation will become more serious in the coming days as the flood victims are forced to live under the sky, deprived of the required resources. Large areas of the country are still under water and millions of people have been displaced.
As a result of the severe floods, preliminary estimated losses have been ascertained in the range of US$18 billion, Pakistan’s agriculture sector has been hit the hardest as the agricultural growth rate may remain at zero or drop to negative as against the current target of 3.9 percent.
