Kerala: Orange alert in six districts today

Orange alerts for very heavy rainfall of 11-20cm have been sounded for Kerala in six districts including Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on Thursday, while Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram are on yellow alerts for isolated heavy rainfall of 7-11cm.

IMD said that this is due to the influence of the low-pressure area now in the Lakshadweep region. It is likely to move north-northwestwards and become more marked during the next three days. Also, a trough runs from Lakshadweep to east-central Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast. Kochi and Kottayam received 4cm of rainfall on Wednesday from 8.30am to 5.30pm.

As the system moves northwestwards, the weather will be squally with thunderstorms and lightning very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala and Lakshadweep till Nov 7. Wind speed reaching 40-50kmph is likely to prevail over the Kerala coast and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during the above-mentioned period.
