Hyderabad Police takes cognisance of ‘auction’ of Muslim women on app

The Cyber Crime Police Station of Hyderabad Police has taken cognisance of the online harassment of Muslim women on an app called ‘Bulli Bai’.

This comes after Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi raised the matter on Twitter. Owaisi also requested Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, minister KT Rama Rao and DGP Mudireddy Mahendar Reddy to take action.

“A symbolic FIR is not enough. They should be arrested. The government should avail the services of CI cell & anti-radicalisation department of the force,” Owaisi said on Twitter.

Photos of hundreds of Muslim women were uploaded on an app called ‘Bulli Bai’ on open-source platform GitHub, which led to massive outrage on Twitter. A journalist, who is one of the women named in the app, claimed that the app would collect photos of Muslim women from their social media accounts and encourage people to participate in their “auction”.

The cyber cells of Delhi and Mumbai Police too have taken cognisance of the matter. Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the government was working with police organisations in Delhi and Mumbai on this matter.

Vaishnaw further said that the perpetrator’s account had been blocked by GitHub.

The National Commission for Women on Twitter said that it has taken cognisance of the incident and that the chairperson, Rekha Sharma, wrote to the Commissioner of Police in Delhi, Rakesh Asthana, to immediately register an FIR in the matter.
