govt brings back mask rule as Covid cases surge; violation punishable

The Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government on Wednesday made wearing of masks mandatory amid a fresh resurgence in Covid-19 cases. Violation to the rule will be punishable, the government said in the latest order.

Earlier, Kerala health minister Veena George said that there was to immediate concern but the government would “continue to remain vigilant since other states are reporting an increase in the number of cases”.

Kerala had eased several Covid restrictions due to the significant fall in the number of Covid cases.

In a related development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today interacted with chief ministers on the emerging Covid-19 situation in the country through video conferencing.

He urged states to remain vigilant, especially in view of the upcoming festivities.

In the last 24 hours, India recorded 2,927 fresh Covid infections in a day which pushed the case tally to 4,30,65,496 while the active caseload increased to 16,279, according to Union Health Ministry data.
