A fire broke out at the top floor of a two storeyed commercial complex building at Thana in Kannur on Sunday afternoon, gutting an lighting appliances shop which was almost ready for inauguration.
The fire broke out at the top floor of the ‘Gateway Centre’ building at around 4pm at the lighting appliances shop which was to be inaugurated shortly. The fire soon engulfed the five shutter rooms of the shop. However no casualties or injuries have been reported.
Fire department officials said that no one was present when the fire broke out though there are reports of two persons running away from the building after the fire broke out. Personnel from Kannur fire station put out the blaze in one hour.
Three fire tenders from the Kannur fire station reached the spot within minutes and brought the fire under control in 30 minutes. The fire was completely doused in 60 minutes. Regional fire officer P Renjith led the operations.
Kannur fire station office K V Lakshmanan said that they could prevent the fire from spreading to nearby shops which included an air-conditioning showroom. The building has suffered loss of Rs Five lakh while the loss suffered by the lighting appliance store is yet to be ascertained.
